3 Guilt-Free Reasons to Spend Time on Social Media
Apr 07, 2020If you are anything like me during these trying times, you’re starting to actually resent your iPhone for its screen time summary. What can I say, desperate times during a nationwide quarantine call for scrolling mindlessly through social for a while to keep me feeling connected. So, since you are on Facebook anyway, why not do a little curating and improve your online presence both personally and professionally.
If your professional self is buttoned up but your social media profile only boasts hilarious cat videos, The Office memes, and whether or not that dress really was purple or gold — it’s time for a little curating, my friend. You might already know this but though companies are not supposed to look up your social media accounts before they make a hiring decision...
They do.
And that is 100% not worth stressing about because I’m about to share with you three questions that will help you get your social presence back on track.
Now more than ever, people crave genuine, real connection with each other, and your uniqueness is what makes you, you. So to be clear, I am not suggesting you remove your personality or that you stop posting fun or silly content. I’m also not urging you to go back and reword posts to sound more commanding or to double-down on industry statistics in your Facebook Lives. No one on Earth believes you’re all business, all the time. However, it does pay to be mindful of what you have on your profile. Consider the following questions.
1. Are there parts of my social profile that no longer apply to me?
We are three and four-dimensional people; so much more than what is listed on our resume. We are blessed with talents and qualities developed by experience, nature, nurture, journeys, and challenges. With time, we change our interests, our activities, and our associations. Take a look at your groups and perhaps keep the ones you could still hold a conversation about and omit ones like Keg Stand Classic, Class Cutters of Sierra High School 1995, or Neighborhood Watch for a town in which you no longer live. Clean up your photos and perhaps lessen the ones from those long nights partying or kissing old flames. Is there outdated contact information listed or links to websites that no longer exist? Is Rocky Horror Picture Show still your favorite movie — really? Imagine you’ve sent your new next door neighbor your social profile before you meet for the first time. Is there anything you wouldn’t want him or her to associate you with before you get to know each other?
In the same turn, refresh your profile with what does pertain to you at this time or unique traits you’ve always wanted people to know but never thought to share. (Here’s looking at you Pepper Steppers Traveling Jumprope Team, Social Media Planner for XYZ Charity, and Ohio Karaoke Tournament Winners 2012.)
2. Is my content ready for multiple audiences?
Can you imagine if that neighbor we talked about above saw 50 explosive posts of yours rallying on about all the injustices of the world, why you dislike every person you’ve ever worked with, and how horrid everyone at the office dresses? If this is your style of communication in person, carry on and hope to find others who resonate with your style. But understand, what you rave about online may turn people off in reality. And when it comes to professionalism, rarely are hiring managers looking for hot temperaments and snarky commentary when they hire a new representative for their company. Be brave enough to be yourself and at the same time do consider who will read what you write — your friends, your Aunt Millie, your neighbors, and likely your future boss.
3. How can I increase my goodwill online?
At a time when we are scrolling more than strolling, just waiting for the Corona Virus to subside, perhaps there is some other message or vibe you want to put out into the world. How can you support local businesses, connect with others in a meaningful way, spread positivity, or tackle some personal goals? Maybe your take on this situation and a glimpse into your world will help another person to get along a little easier today. A little curating can go a long way.
The impression you leave online is a lasting one — so put all that scrolling to good use and make it authentic!
