HOW 3 LITTLE WORDS CAN CHANGE A CAREER:
COMPANY. WIDE. LAYOFF.
In my first 10 years in business, I'd helped 1,500+ Pharma Reps, Managers, and Executives land 6-figure roles at our family's recruiting firm -- but that was just the beginning.
See, when you've looked at more than 16,000 medical sales resumes, you start to see a pattern.
There's a method to what actually works and with that many reps, it becomes plain as day.
And so, after a decade as the 'go to' for interviews and resumes for my friends, family, and colleagues, I'd decided to jump into this exciting industry myself.
My career felt promising -- it really did.
Until.
I was laid off.
Between you and me, with my background as a recruiter and success in marketing and sales early on, I never dreamed 'layoff' would be part of my story.
So, I did what we all do -- cried a little, brushed myself off, got back out there -- and landed another role.
And to do it, I used the same techniques that I had used before to prep our pharma candidates.
After 6 months, I'd done it. I'd landed a thrilling diagnostic oncology job. It was a great gig -- I loved the OR, surgery, and partnering with MDs.
After a year, I'd expanded my territory twice and even had a couple awards under my belt. When suddenly, I noticed a new appointment popped onto my calendar on a Friday with my manager and HR.
You guessed it.
18 months in -- I was laid off.
Again.
Oof. This one hurt.
Not only did I question whether I was any good in this industry -- but if I were any good at all.
Layoffs will do that to you.
I was shocked.
But after a week or two, my mentor urged me to try again.
That whole personal brand and networking thing had worked before after all.
So again, I applied the same principles thinking "lightning might strike twice but never a third time."
And what do you know, it worked.
This time, I landed a dream role in imaging with a pay raise and lots of autonomy -- all in 3 months and excelled for 3 years until (you guessed it) another layoff.
This time due to a company acquisition.
I was disoriented and disappointed.
But also...strangely curious.
If this was going to be the 'new way of things in medical sales,' I'd better decide if I was in or out.
So whether it was really tenacity or just plain old Scottish stubbornness, I couldn't say, but I was not about to go out on someone else's terms.
And that method I'd used before had become comfortable.
It had become as routine as picking out what worked in those 16,000 resumes to get our pharmaceutical sales clients hired.
It was a system.
It couldn't be chance, could it?
Now, at this point, I won't bore you with the rest (and the next 2 layoffs) -- but what I can tell you is that fate had dealt me a good hand.
Hard as they were, those layoffs taught me the specific ways I led my search, wrote my resume, networked for my opportunities, and interviewed to land great roles faster and faster each time.
(The next role in 1 month. The following in 8 days.)
Suffice it to say -- it worked.
And it still does.
And so, I decided to teach it to others.
